In the spring of 2017, three Massachusetts high school students came up with an idea for a new invention. The students approached an engineer/educator to assist them. So, along with their parents, they met with a local attorney to create a legal Limited Liability Company (MPD Innovations, LLC). Then, over the summer of 2017, the students worked to create working prototypes of their invention that they named "Flashing Flora". In September of 2017 the students worked with a patent attorney in New Jersey to create a provisional patent application. A patent search was conducted and a provisional patent application was filed with the patent office on November 15, 2017. Then they started to work on filing for a utility patent. The utility patent application was filed with the patent office in July 2018 and published by the patent office on May 16, 2019.
While working with the patent attorney they were invited to present their invention at the MTC International Inventors Expo in San Diego, California on April 25 and 26, 2018. While in San Diego, the students were invited to a local CBS television station where they were interviewed live on “News 8 Morning Extra”. They were also photographed and an article about them and their invention appeared in the April 26, 2018 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Because of their exposure at the expo, the students are now in negotiations with two companies interested in licensing their invention. The students have also been attending meetings of the New England Chapter of The United Inventors Association at MIT in Cambridge, MA. They have demonstrated their invention at a middle school in Massachusetts as well as at a Providence Bruins game in Rhode Island. They also demonstrated their invention at a technical fair that was held in New Hampshire. These student inventors were invited to attend a conference at the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) in Alexandria, VA in August 2018. The student inventors attended the conference and got to tour several government facilities in Virginia and Washington DC. When they returned home from Virginia, the students worked with the patent office to evaluate the design of the new USPTO website. A Utility patent was granted in the students names on March 30, 2021 by the US Patent and Trademark Office. |
